This is an old song that was popular in both Japan as well as in North America. Sakamoto Kyu, who popularized this song, also died in a plane crash in Japan. Researching his life and death would be an interesting project for a student. One of my Japanese classes in university memorized this song and performed it at an event that the Japanese language department held. Also, you can ask students to choose songs such as the sukiyaki song, practice it, and sing it karaoke style in front of the class. Lastly, there is an English cover of this song called "It's All Because of You" that has lyrics that are slightly different than the Japanese lyrics, so students can compare the two songs.
